How to Help Others

E NEED VOLUNTEERS! The New York City web site needs volunteers. If you own or have access to any NYC reference books (such as census, cemetery, marriage, newspaper abstracts, etc.) and would be willing to do lookups for other NYC researchers, please let me know. Tell me which books you have and I will put you on this lookup page. It's a great to way to make genealogical contacts!!

There are many of the NYC books available that are not listed. If you own any NYC books, whether listed or not, and will do look ups, please let me know. As you can see, volunteers are needed (and valued!), and we can use more than one volunteer per resource, always.

How to Use This Page
Instead of placing email links to our volunteer researchers, we now have a small graphic which lists the volunteers' email address. This has been done specifically as an anti-spam measure. Email address harvesting has become quite sophisticated - there are now robot computer programs that crawl through web pages searching for email addresses. The result could be more spam for our treasured volunteers unless we use the email graphics below.

To send an email to any of the volunteers listed below, simply copy their email address into your email client (as opposed to just clicking on a link as we used to do in the past). Since several of our volunteers have more than one lookup resource available to them, be certain to indicate which lookup resource you need.

Feel free to request a look-up from the following resources. Please do not request something like, "Looking for any O'Connor, Conner, Connor, or O'Conner surname." Be as specific (full name, DOB, etc.) as possible. If you require copies of certificates or obits, you may want to engage in a professional researcher or utilize county clerks for this purpose.

Please be patient. Some of the volunteers listed below receive 100+ emails per week and simply cannot acknowledge each and every query as it arrives. And remember, the following people are volunteers, so a "thank you!" really goes a long way!

NYC Police Census 1890 Following the federal census of 1890, officials of New York City thought federal enumerators had failed to give a true account of city residents. As a result, between September 19th and October 14th of that year, an enumeration of the 24 assembly districts of New York County was taken by policemen of the city. This census produced 1,008 books and 13 percent more residents than the federal enumeration. Of those 1,008 books, only 894 are still available.	Volunteer Needed

New York Chinese Exclusion Index This is an index to over 18,500 "Chinese Exclusion" case files created by the New York District Office of the Immigration and Naturalization Service, ca. 1882-1960. The case files document the entry into the United States of Chinese aliens and the reentry of U.S. citizens of Chinese ancestry under the Chinese Exclusion Acts passed by Congress between 1882 and 1930, and repealed in 1943. New York City Lutheran Church Records, 1834-54	Volunteer Needed
Marble Cemetery Records, New York City, New York, 1830-1937 The oldest extant non-sectarian cemetery in New York City, the Marble Cemetery was designed in 1830 with solid marble vaults built completely underground. This database includes the names of all 2,060 persons buried there. All the families that purchased vaults in the cemetery were important to the dynamic commercial, social, and cultural life of New York in the early nineteenth century. Each record provides the decedent's name, vault number, and burial date. After 1840, at least a fourth of all burials were removed to the newly popular rural cemeteries such as GreenWood.	Anne W. is comprised of researchers just like yourself who are willing to donate their existing transcribed documents or are willing to perform data lookups, transcribe information (such as census records, marriage bonds, wills, obituaries, etc). This will help preserve the information stored in musty old courthouses, basements, and attics that are on fading, crumbling brown paper.
