or the most part, the staff at the cemeteries in and around New York City are more than helpful. In most cases, time permitting, secretaries will perform a brief internment card search while you wait on the phone. This will allow you to verify that the person you are looking for is indeed buried there, and in many cases, they will even provide you with copies via the mail, free of charge. There are a few however that do require your request to be in writing, and some who charge to perform a search of any kind.

Helpful Questions:

Ask the name of the owner of the plot, and if that person owns more than one plot.

Ask the names of the other interments in the plot. (An easy way to find other relatives)

Ask if the plot is in perpetual care, and if so, who made (makes) the payments.

Ask if there is a Soldier's section. If the spouse was a Veteran, they is the possibility that he may not be buried in the family plot.

For African-Americans, remember that many cemeteries did at one time have sections designated for African-Americans. Those cemeteries that do not have computerized databases often keep the two sets of records separate. Do not hesitate to mention that the burial in question of an African-American, as some cemetery clerks do not realize there are two sets of internment's.

Also keep in mind that over the course of the history of the City of New York, many towns that are now parts of the city, were not always. Many of them belonged to Westchester, and Long Island at one time. All of the cemeteries listed are frequent burial places for New Yorkers. The more wealthy may have been interred at the Westchester and Long Island Cemeteries.

Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn now has a "Burial Inquiry" on their website! Just go to the bottom of your computer display, and click on "Burial Inquiry". This will bring up a screen where you can enter surname and given name. You will be able to search over 500,000 interments instantly online! Many, many thanks to Beverly G. There are about 700 interments in this little burial ground, mostly those of descendants of the original Dutch settlers to the area. There are 38 family plots. This cemetery is still active--the last burial having taken place in 1981. The last published lists [Landesman(1977)], date from before 1916 (and include grave stone inscriptions from the old, obliterated, cemetery once across the street).
